Introduction
The purpose of this project was to find the culprit of a fictional murder by using evidence given to use by the crime scene and using various method to prove who the murderer is. We then had to use the evidence we found to make a presentation and confivnce members of the mock trail club to give us a warrant to arrest our suspect.
Content
- Forensic - is the use of the sceintific method in criminal law during investigation.
- Fingerprinting - a way of identifying an individual by their unique finger print
- Ink chromatography - The separation of dyes in ink. This is done by the ink being exposed to a solvent, the dyes dissolves and separate out.
- Solvent - a liquid in which a solute dissolves to form a solution
- Solute - the minor component of a solution, dissolved in the solvent
- Karyotype - The number and appearance of chromosomes in a cell
- Pedigree - A diagram showing the ancestry and traits of an individual and descendants
- DNA Structure - a group of nucleotide in the shape of a double helix that are found in the nucleus of a cell. It give instructions for an organism growth.
- DNA Replication - the process in which DNA copies its self for cell division
- Genetics Vocab
- Alleles - Variation of a gene
- Dominant - Traits that will always be expressed
- Recessive - Traits need to have the same alleles to be expressed
- Co-dominant - One trait is not dominant over the other so phenotype is both ex. AB blood type
- Incomplete dominant - When neither is dominant so phenotype is a mixture of both ex. Pink flowers
- Genotype - The genetic makeup of an organism
- Phenotype - Observable traits in an organism cause by its genotype
- DNA Mutations - random errors in the copying of DNA that can cause diseases
- Chromosomal Disorders
- Huntington's Disease - an inherited chromosomal disease that causes the breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. This can cause movement, thinking and psychiatric problems.
- Triple X syndrome - a chromosomal disease that is caused by a random genetic error that adds an extra X chromosome to a women's genome. It can causes psychological, learning, behavioral, and cognitive problems. It can also cause speech and language skill problems.
- XYY Syndrome - a chromosomal disease that is caused by a random genetic error that adds and extra Y chromosome to a mals genome. It can cause learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and increased height.
Project
Reflection
This project was different from other projects. Doing a project that differed from normal biology was refreshing. it was also more handing and less research based which was nice. Besides that my group was also productive. So we finished the project with little problems and it turned out good too.
During the project there were two personal high points. First work ethic, when we were finding evidence I did my best to be on task and to be doing something. Additionally, at one point during the project most the presentation was done. However, I went back a added more to the presentation and refined the existing one. Second communication, during the project group had many conversations on the evidence we are finding and understanding the evidence we found and how it relates to the murder. We also communicated a lot during the creation of our presentation to know what slides people were doing and how it was going to be set up. On the other hand I also had two low points. The first low point was getting distracted. During the project I would occasionally stop what I'm doing and talk to other classmate around the room or talk to my own teammates and distract them. The second low point was not meeting personal expectations. During this project, it felt like I didn't contribute the amount of work I wanted too to the group and it makes me frustrated, even though I worked a good amount of it. Additionally, some days I couldn't focus and I wasn't productive.
