Introduction
The purpose of this project was to use a chemical reaction or product from one to produce four art pieces. Through the process of making the art we had to learn the equation for the reaction and what type of reaction it is. Once we created our art pieces we would present them to our class and attempt to have them placed in the new science building. For our art piece, my group planned to use the elephant toothpaste reaction to create a painting.
We would use hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), dish soap, food dye, and a catalysis (activated yeast, sodium iodide, or potassium iodide) to cause our reaction. The equation for our reaction would be H2O2 (aq) + KI (aq) → H2O (l) +KI (l) + O2 (g) + E (Heat). We hoped that this reaction would stain the canvas with the food dye placed in the reaction to create a unique design. Unfortunately our project didn't perform as well as we wanted. For our first attempt we used yeast as our catalysis. Unfortunately it was extremely disappointing, there was basically no reaction. We then tried sodium iodide and potassium iodide for our catalysts, the reaction was more impressive however is it was not what we were hoping for; there was no real energy still. Even after boosting the percentage of the hydrogen peroxide from 3% to 30% we relived that booth of them gave similar reaction size. Leading us to the conclusion the 30% was depleted and had lost alot of its oxygen, which is need for the reaction. Additionally, the staining of painting was not very successful, either making the canvas have a very bland brown color or almost burning the fabric.

Content
- Aqueous - (aq) dissolved in water.
- Solid - (s) state of matter for a substance in a chemical equation. All the catalysis´ in our reaction were solid
- Liquid - (l) state of matter for a substance in a chemical equation. This was the state of matter for our reactants in our reaction.
- Gas - (g) state of matter for a substance in a chemical equation. This was one of the product of elephant toothpaste.
- Catalysis - is a chemical that is added to a solution to start a reaction. For our project the catalysis for our reaction were activated yeast, sodium iodide, and potassium iodide.
- Synthesis - is a reaction were two or more reactants combine to create a product
- Single Replacement - is a reaction were one element replaces another in a compound
- Double Replacement - is a reaction were the cations and anions switch between two compounds to form two need compounds.
- Combustion - is a reaction between a fuel and oxidant to cause a product s of CO2 and H20 and an explosion.
- Decomposition - is a reaction were there is the breakdown of a single reactant into two or more unique products. Elephant Toothpaste´s reaction is decomposition, the catalyst for the reaction cause the hydrogen peroxide to breakdown.
- Soluble - a chemical that is capable of being dissolved in a solution
- Insoluble - a chemical that is incapable of being dissolved in a solution
- Law of Conservation of Mass - Matter can not be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction.
- Precipitate - the creation of a solid from a solution.
- Solution - a homogeneous mixture between two or more substances (do not react), in this mixture a substance dissolves in a liquid
- Supernate - the name of the liquid above a precipitate.
- Reactivity Series - a list of metals ordered in their reactivity. Used to help determine if a single displacement reaction will occur and whats its products will be.

Reflection
The Chemist are Artist Project was a challenge for me and my group. For almost a third of the work time half of my group was absent due to sickness. Leaving me and one other team mate to try to figure out something with a failed elephant toothpaste concept. After the realization, we switch to growing crystals. However this also came a fault with how long it takes to grow them and them not forming on the string line in the solution. I would say what I learned from the this project is that projects or experiments done always go the way you want or hoped.
Things I did well during the project were collaboration and work ethic. I believe I did well with collaborating with my group during the project. I brought up some ideas how we could use elephant toothpaste to make art, I suggested a painting which what we tried.
Second, my work ethic during the Artist Project was fine. I would stay on task during class and I didn't get distracted to terribly much. Then when half the group got sick and we started to realize the reaction was not working I still tried to work on the reaction to see if we could create anything better. After that, I moved on to making crystals and I tried to make the best out of what we had.
Things I could have improved on during the project were leadership and decisiveness. Personally, I could have done better with being an active member of my group. Since I had a friend i was working with and he had good idea at the time I kinda went along for the ride instead of finding ways we could improve our reaction or suggesting another reaction entirely for our project. So for the future, I will attempt to be a more active team mate and not just let someone come up with all the ideas. Secondly, the other personal attribute that I needed to improve on during the project was my decisiveness. Around half way through the project we starting to realize that the elephant toothpaste painting was not working as we hoped. I didn't know if I should to switch to something or stick with the toothpaste and try something with it. It took me a few to realize that we should try something else.
